Hair loss is a problem and like all problems, there are solutions to it. Some fixes work for certain people while others work for others. There are two main types of fixes which can be categorized into surgical and non-surgical. Both have their pros and cons and the final verdict on which one is the best depends on each individual case. Here is a brief look on these methods.

Non-Surgical Methods of Hair Restoration

There are two main types of non-surgical methods in use at this point in time.

Medications

Medications such as Finasteride (oral medication) and Minoxidil (solution for application) are very famous for hair restoration. Studies have shown that Finasteride is quite useful for restoration of hair and most people using it not only stop losing hair but also can regrow the lost ones. It is a prescription only drug. Minoxidil on the other hand is applied to the scalp and is over the counter. The results in stopping hair loss are excellent but hair regrowth is done in only a handful of cases.

The issues with both these options are the need of constant use and the fact that they both have side effects. Side effects of Finasteride in particular can be quite strong.

Hair Replacement Systems

These give you an instant hair boost as they are attached to the scalp. This consists of a synthetic scalp and hair attached to it. It is ideal for people with almost completely bald heads who do not like the idea of going under the knife. It does need to be adjusted every now and again by a professional and its life can be from two to five years before you need a new one.

Surgical Methods of Hair Restoration

The two most commonly used surgical methods are Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). In both methods the hair are collected from donor sites and then the follicular units are grafted into the recipient area by a surgeon.

FUE hair transplant though is less invasive as the follicular units are punched out in comparison with FUT hair transplant where a strip of scalp is cut from the donor area to obtain follicles. The downtime for a person can be form a week to two weeks generally. The results are completely visible in one years’ time as the new hair grow fully in this period.

Both surgical and non-surgical options are useful and it comes down to the personal preferences as well as the type of commitment a person wants to make in order to get the hair back.
