Safe Donor Areas for Hair Transplant

Donor Areas for Hair Transplant

There are many blessings of nature that we take for granted and understand their worth only when they are gone. While many of them are lost permanently, some may be salvaged back. Hair fall in the second category.
There are many options for hair restoration available. While some opt for hair restoration systems, others want a more permanent solution in shape of hair transplants. There are plenty of hair transplant procedures that are available to choose from. The latest hair transplant surgeries are available without trouble in the Emirates as well.

The one common factor in all these transplants are the donor hair. Without them, the transplant cannot be done. But where do these hair come from?

Important Traits of Transplanted Hair

The transplanted hair are known to not suffer loss once transplanted. Regular maintenance is needed off course. This is due to the nature of the transplanted hair. They are resistant to Androgenic Alopecia or male pattern baldness which is the main cause of hair loss globally. It is caused by the presence of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is a male hormone.

Traditional Donor Sites

The back and the side of the head have hair that are naturally resistant to DHT. This makes these sites the perfect donor area. Hair follicles can be extracted both with the help of cutting a strip of scalp (strip method) and with the help of a pneumatic punch (FUE) from these donor areas.

Newer Experiments

Some experimentation has been done in recent times when it comes to the donor hair. Body hair such as chest and leg hair appear to be useful for transplants. A limited use of these hair is being experimented with and this may soon be the norm. Currently, follicular units can only be acquired from these areas with the help of FUE method.

Hair Follicle Extraction

Hair follicles are extracted in two ways. In Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), a strip of scalp is cut from the back of the head and dissected under a microscope into individual follicular units for transplant.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the other process. It uses a punch like mechanism to extract individual hair follicles that are ready to be transplanted. The size of each follicular unit is 1mm or less.
