After Care and Risks Associated With Beard Transplant

Hair transplant after care

Are you planning to get a beard transplant to look more masculine and mature? There are a lot of things that you need to take care of as you gear up for the procedure. There is a long list of Do’s and Don’ts that you need to follow before and after the surgery to make it a big success. Here we will share with you some after care tips and risks associated with beard transplant. Follow them after the transplant for a smooth, uneventful recovery.

Beard Transplant after Care:

Here are some common instructions that you should follow after facial hair transplant:

  • Apply cold compressions: This will help relieve symptoms like bleeding, swelling and pain. However, avoid applying extra pressure as this may dislodge newly transplanted hairs.
  • Start taking prescription medicines: Your doctor will prescribe you several medications to help you recover quickly and uneventfully. These typically include pain medications and antibiotics. Start taking these medicines immediately after the surgery.
  • Sleep with your head elevated: You need to keep your head elevated at 45 degrees angle at least for 36 to 48 hours. The best idea is to sleep in a reclining chair. But if you don’t find the idea of reclining chair comfortable, use two or three pillows to elevate your head at an angle of 45 degrees.
  • Don’t touch your face unnecessarily: Touching face unnecessarily or picking at the scab is strictly prohibited. This will not only increase your risk of dislodging transplanted hairs, but may also induce an infection. Resist your craving for picking and scratching at the wounds; instead let the scab come off naturally while you wash your face.

Risks Associated With Beard Transplant:

When performed by an experienced hair transplant surgeon, and the aforementioned post-op instruction are followed carefully, facial hair transplant is a quite safe procedure that does not cause any potential risks. Some common side effects that you may experience after the surgery include:

  • Swelling: You may experience slight swelling at the transplanted areas, but this should be temporary and subside within 36 to 48 hours. If swelling persists longer than 72 hours, consult your physician as this could be a symptom of infection.
  • Bleeding: Mild to moderate bleeding is also possible from the donor as well as recipient area. But this can be easily controlled by applying gentle pressure to the problem area. Cold compressions can also help alleviate symptoms like bleeding and swelling.
  • Scarring: Scarring is part and parcel of every surgery and a beard transplant is no different. Extent of scarring depends a lot on the graft extraction technique used. Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), aka the traditional strip method transplant, will result in a notable linear scar at the donor site. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) on the other hand will cause hundreds of hardly detectable pinhole scars.
  • Infection: Infection is also a possibility, but chances of developing an infection are meager if you take proper care of the transplanted areas. Follow your surgeon’s post-op instructions carefully and keep the treated areas clean if you wish to minimize chances of an infection.
