Hair Transplant Post-Operative Care

Hair loss treatment in Saudi Arabia

Preparing well for hair transplant surgery is no doubt crucial for getting the best results. But taking proper care of your scalp and transplanted follicles after the surgery is even more important and bears a direct effect on the ultimate outcome of the surgery. Here we will help you familiarize yourself with the various aspects of recovery process following hair transplant surgery. Go through them and help yourself recover quickly and smoothly from hair transplant surgery.

  1. Your Scalp Will Be Sore And Painful:

Your scalp will be sore and tender immediately after the surgery. Start taking prescribed pain medications immediately afterwards to minimize the post-op pain and discomfort. Cold compression also offer relief, but be very gentle and avoid applying pressure to the scalp.

  1. Relax As Much As You Can:

Although hair transplant is performed on outpatient basis with local anesthesia its after effects are no less than a major surgery. Expect your body to remain lethargic and painful for a few days after the surgery. To restore your strength and energy, just relax as much as you can while the pinhole size wounds on your scalp heal.

  1. Sleep With Your Head Alleviated:

For the first few days sleep with your head alleviated at 45 degree. This will help prevent unnecessary bleeding. Alleviating your head will also minimize pain and discomfort.

  1. Do Not Take Blood Thinners:

Your surgeon will stop you from consuming blood thinners for at least a couple of weeks prior to the surgery. You will be required to refrain from blood thinners for the same period after the surgery. Blood thinners include all the pain medications containing aspirin, such as Ibuprofen, Anacin, Warfarin and Excedrin etc. Use the pain medications prescribed by your surgeon only. Some supplements also have blood thinning effects. Discuss with your doctor if you are taking any.

  1. Take Medicines As Directed By The Doctor:

Along with pain killers, your doctor will also prescribe you antibiotics for quick wound healing. Start taking these medications immediately after the surgery and continue for 3 or 5 days – as prescribed by your physician.

  1. Avoid Smoking And Alcohol Intake:

Call quit to smoking and alcohol consumption for at least a couple of weeks after your hair transplant surgery. Nicotine present in cigarettes affects not only the healing process but also the hair regrowth. It prevents hemoglobin in your blood from supplying oxygen efficiently to the scalp, which hampers hair growth big time.

  1. Do Not Touch Your Scalp:

Touching your scalp is strictly prohibited. The germs on your hands can induce infection which will not only delay the healing process but will also damage the newly transplanted hair follicles. Also avoid scratching your scalp or picking at the wounds, as it will worsen the situation. Cold compression may help alleviate these symptoms.

  1. Say No To Laborious Activities:

While you may be allowed to resume most of your routine activities after the first week, vigorous exercises should be avoided for three to four weeks at least. Activities that raise pulse rate increase blood flow to the scalp, and this increases risk of bleeding from the incisions.

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure:

Do not expose your wounds to sunlight until they have properly healed. Exposing your scars to the ultraviolet rays of sun will slow down healing process and affect the eventual results.
