Information

Three specific factors determine the course of hair loss: genes, age, and the sensitivity of the hair roots to hormones. Genetics may play a key role in hair loss. A history of androgenetic alopecia on either side of your family increases your risk of balding. Heredity also affects the age at which you begin to lose hair and the developmental speed, pattern, and extent of your baldness. Early onset of hair loss (adolescence or early 20’s) often results in rapid, extensive loss of hair. Later onset of hair loss (around age 35-45) produces a more favorable prognosis. Those who have a full head of hair in their 40’s have most likely bypassed hair loss and will not go bald. Male hormones may also play a significant role in hair loss. If a hormonal imbalance is associated with an overproduction of testosterone, hair may begin thinning over the crown of the scalp. Testosterone leads to a shortening of the growth phases and regrowth becomes increasingly puny until the hair follicle eventually dies. Correcting hormonal imbalances may stop hair loss. Many people try to first remedy the situation by using lotions, shampoos, or other topical products. These are typically overpriced and do not correct the issue.

How can transplantation help?

During an outpatient procedure, the strong, intact hair follicles from the back of the head are transplanted to the thinning or balding area to create a natural, healthy appearance. There, the transplanted hair continues to grow because of their genetic predisposition for lifetime growth. The transplanted hair cannot be distinguished from the other hairs and can be washed, blow dried, styled or colored as usual. Please see our “Surgery” tab for further information on hair transplantation techniques.
